Some users may notice that their subwoofer sounds noticeably weak or even doesn't produce any sound when playing Dolby 5.1 audio content on a single WiiM device.
However, this behavior is expected and not a bug. It is related to how Dolby 5.1 audio is handled when only a single WiiM device is used. This article explains why this happens and how to get LFE sound from your subwoofer.
Why This Happens
What Is the LFE Channel?
In a Dolby 5.1 surround sound system, the LFE channel—often called the “.1”— is a dedicated audio channel used for special low-frequency effects, such as explosions, deep rumbles, or cinematic bass. It is designed to be played through a subwoofer and is separate from the regular bass present in music or dialogue.
How Is Dolby 5.1 Audio Handled on a Single Device?
When using a single WiiM device, the audio output is limited to 2-channel stereo. If a subwoofer is connected, the system will extract low-frequency sounds from the stereo output and send them to the subwoofer.
When playing Dolby 5.1 content on a single WiiM device, the device uses the Dolby decoding library to downmix the 5.1 audio into stereo. According to Dolby specifications, only the main five channels (Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right) are included in the downmix—the LFE channel is excluded. As a result, the subwoofer will only output low-frequency sounds in the stereo mix, not the dedicated LFE effects.
What Is the Result?
You may hear some bass through the subwoofer, but it’s coming from in the stereo mix—not from the LFE channel. In action movies or games, explosions or deep effects may be missing or feel weak.
How to Get LFE Sound from Your Subwoofer
To hear true LFE effects in Dolby 5.1 audio, you need to use 2 to 4 WiiM devices to build a WiiM 5.1 Surround Sound System. This system enables proper Dolby 5.1 decoding and full-channel playback—including the LFE channel routed to your subwoofer for accurate, immersive bass performance.

The lack of LFE output in single-device playback is not a bug, but a result of Dolby’s downmixing behavior. To enjoy true 5.1 surround sound with LFE effects, we recommend building a WiiM 5.1 Surround Sound System.
